Plot summary
Nick Dunne teaches writing in Missouri, where he moved from New York with his wife, Amy, after both lost their jobs. Amy inspired the Amazing Amy children's books her parents wrote, so when Nick comes home on their fifth wedding anniversary to a shattered table and no Amy, the case becomes a media spectacle. Detective Rhonda Boney and Officer Jim Gilpin search the house and find blood in the kitchen. Questioned at the station, Nick cannot say who Amy's close friends are or her blood type. Following the clues of Amy's annual anniversary treasure hunt, he tries to work out what she meant by them.

- Reese Witherspoon was originally slated to play Amy Dunne. Executive producer Leslie Dixon read Gillian Flynn's manuscript in 2011 and took it to Witherspoon, who developed it with Dixon and Bruna Papandrea and went round the studios with it in early 2012.
- David Fincher chose Rosamund Pike as Amy precisely because American audiences did not know her, and because he felt she had an enigmatic quality. Tyler Perry, known mainly for comedy, was cast against type as the defense lawyer.

Producer Cean Chaffin said Fincher shot as many as 50 takes of each scene on average. Gillian Flynn said he was just as strict about plausibility, changing the scene in which Amy collects her own blood because he did not find it believable.- When interiors had to be finished in Los Angeles, one door from the Missouri locations could not be replicated, so the production shipped the actual door across the country from Cape Girardeau.
- Fincher found the sound of the film at a chiropractor's appointment, where the piped music was insincerely trying to make him feel fine. He asked Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the musical equivalent of that facade.
