Plot summary
Cobb extracts secrets from people's subconscious during shared dreams, working with his partner Arthur. The trade has made him an international fugitive who cannot go home to his children. Saito hires him for inception, the planting of an idea in Robert Fischer, son of Saito's competitor Maurice, to dissolve the family conglomerate. Saito promises to drop the charges against Cobb in return. Cobb gathers a team: Ariadne, an architecture student who designs the dreamscapes; Eames, a forger who impersonates others inside a dream; and Yusuf, a chemist whose sedatives make a dream within a dream within a dream possible.

- Inception's title became a suffix in English, "-ception", used to describe layering, nesting or recursion, taken from the film's "dream within a dream" idea.
- Leonardo DiCaprio was the first actor cast in Inception, but Brad Pitt and Will Smith were the first two choices offered the role of Cobb; Smith turned it down because he didn't understand it.
- Édith Piaf's "Non, je ne regrette rien" plays throughout Inception and is used to accurately time the dreams, and Hans Zimmer reworked pieces of the song into cues of his score.
- Local authorities refused to let the crew use real explosives for the Paris bistro explosion, so high-pressure nitrogen was used to create a series of blasts, shot by Wally Pfister with six high-speed cameras.
- The hotel corridor set for the second dream level was built by Guy Hendrix Dyas, Chris Corbould and Wally Pfister and rotated a full 360 degrees, an idea inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- The Alberta shoot used Fortress Mountain, a temporarily closed ski resort, where an elaborate set took three months to build near the chairlift's top station and the crew waited for a huge snowstorm.
- Inception and its trailers are widely credited with launching the 2010s trend of blockbuster trailers hitting audiences with "braam" sounds: bassy, thunderous, foghorn-like notes meant to feel apocalyptic.
