Don Siegel’s “Two Mules for Sister Sara” captures the best elements of Hollywood film and Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns. Shot in Mexico, the film follows Hogan (Clint Eastwood) a former soldier employed by Mexican revolutionaries fighting against the invading French. Hogan stumbles upon the attempted rape of a nun named Sara (Shirley MacLaine) who the French are looking for-it seems she’s raising money for the Mexican army. Hogan agrees to help Sister Sara get to the Mexican camp if, I’m the process, he gets the money being held by the French in their garrison when the camp attacks.
A well crafted and oiled machine, Siegel does a great job of getting the film to run smoothly. Evidently MacLaine and director Siegel didn’t exactly enjoy working together and MacLaine wasn’t feminine enough for Siegel’s taste; he commented that she was a hard, cold woman who was hard to get to like. Eastwood surprisingly found her somewhat intimidating to work with due to the same qualities. Perhaps MacLaine was method acting either way the film survived the less than ideal working relationship and has gone on to become a classic western.
The restoration done for the film looks marvelous-colors pop and the burnished skin tones represent what the film should look like. I do question why Kinko decided to put the domestic versi0n and International version on separate discs-there’s only nine minutes of additional footage in the International cut and I wonder why it couldn’t have been authored using seamless branching. Nevertheless, both versions (using much of the same source) look marvelous. It doesn’t state if the 4K resorrari0n is from the original camera negative or not for both films but, either way, this bests the Blu-ray that Universal put out with a maxed out bit rate.
The audio sound terrific with a dialog up front and clear and Ennio Morricone’s iconic score crystal clear. Subtitles are provided in English only.
The special features included a good commentary track by film director Alex Cox on the international version, a vintage featurette with Clint Eastwood at home (with the restoration footage interpolated replacing the poor black and white footage used in the original version of thefeaturette) and poster/stills gallery. The domestic version features 2 TV and 4 radio spots along with the original theatrical trailer.
This is region A locked. Kino does provide a reversible cover with one side using the original poster artwork.

It's been decades since I last saw this movie, and quite frankly I wasn't sure why I had it on my saved list, but, decided to buy it. I'm glad I did, very enjoyable. Not at all what I anticipated, a nice plot twist. Two great infamous actors in their youth. A real pleasure to watch.
