Nicknamed The Badger, The Gipper, The Rabbit and The Bull respectively, Paul Brennan, Charles McDevitt, James Baker and Raymond Martos are all traveling salesman with the Mid-American Bible company, they selling ornate, illustrated and expensive Catholic-oriented bibles door-to-door. They generally visit churches to make the initial contact, and follow-up with at home visits with congregation members. Most of their customers are working class, many of who can ill afford to purchase the bibles, but still do anyway. The salesmen, although different in their approach true to their associated nickname, all include a heavy dose of good old fashioned Catholic guilt in their sales pitch. Regardless, it is not always an easy life. The men are constantly on the road away from their true families, meaning that they often treat each other as their family. And the sales do not always go well, which plays both on the possibility of being let go - as per the veiled threats seen in a company salesmen's meeting - and the notion of the constant rejection getting to their psyches as human beings.
