Plot summary
In 1987, at twenty-two, Jordan Belfort takes a job as a stockbroker at L.F. Rothschild under Mark Hanna, and learns that the brokers around him measure success by how rich they become. The market crashes on Black Monday and he loses the position. He joins Investor's Center, a Long Island brokerage that trades in pink sheet penny stocks, and his aggressive pitching brings in money. His neighbor Donnie Azoff, who sells children's furniture, quits his job to go into stocks with him. They set up in an abandoned auto garage, recruit Jordan's childhood friends and former coworkers, and train them to sell with a script. Jordan names the firm Stratton Oakmont, and its rise brings a Forbes exposé and the attention of the FBI.

- In January 2014 Jonah Hill revealed in an interview with Howard Stern that he had made only $60,000 on the film, the lowest possible SAG-AFTRA rate for his amount of work, while DiCaprio, who also produced, received $10 million.
- The film uses the word "fuck" 569 times, averaging 2.81 profanities per minute; the previous record holders were Scorsese's gangster films Goodfellas and Casino, with 300 and 422 uses of the word respectively.
- Vitamin D powder was used as the fake substance for cocaine in the film, and Hill was hospitalized with bronchitis after snorting large quantities of it during filming.
- The role of Aunt Emma was first offered to Julie Andrews, who declined while recovering from an ankle injury and was replaced by Joanna Lumley; Olivia Wilde auditioned for Naomi but was deemed "too old" despite DiCaprio being a decade older, and the role went to Margot Robbie.
- Donnie Azoff is based on Danny Porush, whose name was changed after Porush threatened to sue the filmmakers and Paramount; Porush maintains that much of the film is fictional and that Azoff is not an accurate depiction of him.
- Nadine Macaluso, Belfort's ex-wife on whom the character Naomi was based, said the depiction of Belfort and of their relationship was accurate, and that she hopes to educate people about the signs of domestic abuse and toxic relationships.
- The real Jordan Belfort appears in the film himself, playing the Auckland Straight Line host seen at the end of the film.
