Plot summary
Connie Ennis, a war widow in New York, supports her young son, Timmy, by working as a comparison shopper for a store that competes with Crowley's. Steve Mason, a veteran who wants to move to Southern California and build sailboats, sells toys at Crowley's for the Christmas season. At his counter Connie buys an expensive electric train set and asks him nothing about it. That night Timmy peeks at the package, thinks it is his present, and is told it is not. Connie's steady suitor, the lawyer Carl Davis, proposes to her, and she gives him no answer at once. When she brings the train set back for a refund, Steve admits he knew what she was doing and refunds her money anyway.

- Mitchum's casting was damage control: the Christmas romance let him briefly depart from his typical film noir, Western and war roles, and was intended to help rehabilitate his image following a notorious marijuana bust.
