- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2021I already own the Ouija movie from 2014 and liked that one though for some reason a lot were not fans. Yet some how I have never watched this. I kept thinking this was a different movie that I disliked.
Well I just watched this movie and it is awesome. That girl is super creepy. Not that scary movies scare me. But they did good with her, she was a perfect fit. So in my opinion this movie is 100% worth watching.
I had debating on just renting the digital copy for 3.99 or just paying 14.99 to own it. After seeing in all my horror groups how many liked it and the decent reviews on Amazon. Of course there are always negative reviews too. I am glad I decided to just buy the digital copy. I will definitely watch it again!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2022This is a movie that is quite campy in it's entertainment slickness and accessibility. "Quija: Origin of Evil" has offered escape over the last few years. It's a good story that's working on all cylinders because the characters are interesting, real, and very likable. In "Quija" horror presents in the vascular invading forces within a family in Los Angeles realizing a malevolence in quaint distractions and curiosities.
The mother, who works out of her home in Los Angeles, is a fortune teller. Alice(Elizabeth Reaser) is not a strange person who has culled some requisite commonsenses, but Alice is attractive and her congeniality is trustworthy and unpretentious. Similarly, Alice's oldest daughter, "Lina", for Paulina, is brash in a kind way, and Annalise Basso playing "Lina" is a flush placement of a Catholic school girl. Lina is like her mother, skeptical but not tarnished or pulled down by trendy beliefs. The youngest Zander daughter, Doris(Lulu Wilson) is quite awesome also, as a fit for an innocent girl who is bright and likeable in a single parent home.
The story moves along, is not impelled with false motives and the poetry construed in the happenings becomes a taut suspense traction. The lighting in this film is well done. Plains are seen in suave veneers under hanging lights, or intrusive sun blocks. A space is occupied dreamily by a round table holding a quija board. Grains in shadows protrude through misted light.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2017This was a really great, creepy take on the use of Ouija Boards. Naturally, no one follows the instructions, i.e., don't use alone, say goodbye, yadda, yadda, but it still made one's skin prickle with the thought of opening doors which shouldn't be opened. It was refreshing to see Elizabeth Reaser as the mother of possessed daughters, rather than the mother of vamps & ironic that she played, the operative word, at being a 'fortune teller.' It was also good to see Henry Thomas again in a movie, albeit horror, playing a priest. Which is another irony because Catholics do not believe in the use of 'seers, fortune telling, etc.' That's considered blasphemy, so there is that hole in the movie. Still this was way above any of the other 'B' movies about Ouija. Personally, I say don't go casting a rod in the dark...one never knows who or what will grab the hook. Good flick for Halloween... aka...Samhain! FYI, this is a Gaelic/Celtic/Germanic word pronounced as 'Sowein'! Have fun in the dark!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2017Wow. THIS was completely unexpected! I rated the 2014 Ouija 3/5 stars, and felt that was generous. This prequel is 10000 times scarier than that one. I mean, whoa. If you're a horror fan, you have GOT to check this out. I loved it. It doesn't rely on cheap jump scares, it doesn't use a bunch of CGI or other computerized scares, and it has a good, solid plot that isn't overcomplicated. The acting is exceptional. Lulu Wilson as little Doris is beyond phenomenal in a quite challenging role! I think we have a future Scream Queen!
I found myself screaming out loud several times, and I'm no wuss when it comes to horror! I watch a ton of it, so I'm not really scared all that easily. Give it a whirl, but relax and let yourself be scared. I tend to think that the really poor reviews of horror movies are people who go into it as a challenge to NOT be afraid. I think it takes some relaxation, tapping into your youth, and just letting yourself have fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2018This is certainly a great thriller.....there were MANY scenes when I was on the edge of my seat, white-knuckling the sofa! Nowadays, you hear PLENTY about the "ghosts/spirits" that can use a Ouija board as a portal into this world and start out haunting the family who played the game. But the movie makes it that much more crazy to think about! I'll never play that game again as long as I live after watching this flick. That's for SURE!!! The only thing I wish is that I'd watched THIS movie before the original Ouija movie. Even though the release sequence is Ouija and THEN Ouija: Origin of Evil, the second is technically FIRST in the timeline of events (akin to The daVinci Code movies...all released in reverse chronological order). So if you have both movies, I'd definitely watch Ouija: Origin of Evil prior to watching the first released Ouija movie!

3.0 out of 5 stars Très bon film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie!
You know when you watch a movie on pay TV and you just can't get yourself to erase it from your DVR?
Well, that's why I bought my copy of "Ouija: The Origin of Evil" (2016), which is a sequel (or "prequel") to the
boring "Ouija" (2014); this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat; great ambience, story, directing, writing and acting! I highly recommend it to fans of the horror genre who were disappointed by the first movie; this one is a keeper!
