Product Description
Cross-country travelers on an isolated highway are arrested by a corrupt sheriff and taken to the local jail in Desperation, Nevada. Handcuffed in the back seat of the police cruiser, they watch in horror as they pass townspeople lying dead in the streets. When the sheriff begins to physically transform, the wayward hostages realize there is a deeper and bigger evil at play in the town of Desperation.

Director Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers), also recruited by Stephen King to remake The Shining, knows how to capture King's horror aesthetic on film. Desperation, based on a more recent King novel, is a pastiche of earlier King novelties, such as the psycho in uniform, this time Sheriff Collie Entragian (Ron Perlman), and dogs summoned by the devil, this time by TAK, an ancient Chinese demon. Desperation, Nevada has a collapsed mine full of Chinese immigrant ghosts, whose spirits are trapped with TAK until they're accidentally unleashed. The TAK-possessed local sheriff is killing everyone, save a few travelers who stumble through on road trips. In the opening scene, Mary (Annabeth Gish) and her beau are pulled over by Sheriff Entragian, framed by his placing of marijuana in their trunk, then read their rights with a Satanic "I will kill you" thrown in. Later, Steve (Steven Weber), Cynthia (Kelly Overton), and Vietnam vet John Marinville (Tom Skerrit), ride into town, and they too encounter the evil policeman's wrath. They all meet a brave, imprisoned boy, David (Shane Haboucha), with whom they team up to end the mayhem. Desperation uses blue and green lighting to embrace the funhouse look, and camera shots highlighting the Sheriff's deranged face make the film occasionally spooky. But the rehashed plot detracts from the fear-factor, leaving one to pine for earlier King story adaptations, like Misery, or Cujo.--Trinie Dalton

- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2016Having read and fully enjoyed the book, I was a bit hesitant to watch the move as so often changes are made that don't fit the story or so much is cut out that it's a different story completely (as in the first movie made of The Shining). But I took a chance and I'm glad I did! This was an excellent depiction of the novel, even with the challenges of condensing a somewhat complex story into a movie time frame. The acting was fully believable; love the allusions and symbolism and the existential questions that are interwoven into the film. They fit the story line and don't drag it down - an amazing feat, I think. This is one of my favorite Stephen King novels and now one of my favorite movies (ranks up there with the television mini-series of The Stand for me).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2024Good movie. Love Stephen King. Good price, fast shipping.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2024Like some have said with other adaptations of Stephen King's works, it is not as good as the source material. There are various things they touch on, which -- due to media and time -- they cannot go as much in depth with as with the book. As such, the characters do not get the full depth and development.
That said, they are still entertaining, mostly fleshed out characters, and many of them do experience development through out the movie.
I would not put it up there with either version of IT and the original Pet Semetary, but better than The Sleepwlkers, or the Pet Semetary remake.
Not for everyone, but enjoyable to the right people.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2019The kid who plays David is a bit weaksauce, but the rest of the actors are decent. Ron Perlman is fun, but somewhat underused. The movie mostly feels like an abridged version of the book, sometimes overly abridged, so that elements left in from the book don't make a lot of sense. Also, they added a subplot for Jonny that feels a little unnecessary. Aside from giving Ron Perlman a chance to play a creepy, hammy bad guy, this movie also gives a better picture of the can-toi than I had before. Not sure if either of those is enough of a reason for the movie to exist, but it does whether it should or not, so might as well take the good aspects where you find them.
If you want the story, read the book. If you just want to have fun with Ron Perlman and friends in a typically overdone King movie, then this is the one for you.
P.S. two things that bothered me about the book and are carried over to the movie - 1) how do they uncover Rattlesnake #1 on the INSIDE of the China pit? The pit wasn't there when the mineshaft was dug, so how did the entrance end up there? 2) David's God is a ball of flaming d***s - among other crimes, He leads David's entire family to a horrible death just so somebody else can die sealing Tak underground (because God can raise the dead and multiply the loaves and fishes but not cause a bit of ceiling to fall into a one-inch hole) - yet by the end of the story, everyone is singing God's praise and saying God is love. Stockholm syndrome much? Makes me wanna spit. If you got this far, thanks for listening to my rant

- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2013I totally enjoyed Ron Perlman's antics as bad-guy lawman Collie Entragian. I know this is a horror flick and everything is supposed to be deadly serious, but Perlman was a hoot. Especially with his version of the song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off." Worth watching just for that. That said, it IS a quality horror movie, as those based on Stephen King's novels usually are -- a far cry from the cheap thrills of the low-budget slasher flicks. This one actually has a plot and a story.
