- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2019This movie is for people who don't need constant eye candy or noise candy or thrilling chase scenes or even explosive fighting with just dialogue.
These are the rare gems I truly adore and appreciate. It's realistic, it's about *feeling* completely. You feel apart of this story and these people whether you want to or not. The acting is just brilliant by everyone involved. Especially the leads. Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones. I have never been attracted to Guy Pearce but damn, now I am. Felicity Jones is truly underrated. Mackenzie Davis is probably going to be a breakout star from this. Amy Ryan was an amazingly refreshing surprise.
It was tough because watching this, I am at an age where (unmarried but in a committed relationship) I can relate to both the wife and the "other woman." Completely. I didn't hate the guy at all even. I too felt his pain, and his confusion. Being an artistic type myself (I think other musicians or actors or performers will resonate with this even more too) I understand that feeling of feeling like you've gotten older, your best days are behind you. I don't have a marriage and kids yet, but I am 32 and have had to sacrifice certain aspects of my life for more realistic goals.
I could see anyone getting to that point in life if you have certain dreams that change. Male or female, married or not married.
I love how realistically this is shot. I love every moment. I love the script being improvised and the actors being so naturally talented with improvisation and riffing off one another.
I've watched this twice now, and the feelings it gives me—sadness, hope, hopelessness, loss, nostalgia, attraction, rejection, excitement, frustration, inspiration—- they always return.
For some it might be "slow"---- for me it's captivating the entire time. The subtle looks, shots of hands wringing, sounds, music, forks scratching plates in silence. It's all perfect. I never get bored, because I am so in the story with them for better or worse.
The ending is rough. But at the same time it's open-ended. It doesn't have to be sad or happy. To me it rings quite true with life. It ebbs and flows. The ending for me is the same. We saw the end by seeing the beginning of that day for that family. Who knows where it goes? We just know it will continue to. Because that’s life. You either make the best of it with the choices you’ve committed to or you don’t.
It’s not your average romance/drama. And I love that. Beautifully bittersweet.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017This movie was absolutely captivating. I would watch it again and again to keep expierencing the emotion. Everything was so realistic...not st all one of those cliche movies where you can tell it's being acted out. I felt as though I was watching these issues unfold in front of my face. Sad and heart breaking, but extremely real and raw ending. For the people who were disappointed in the ending-- let's be realistic, everything does not always turn out flowers and rainbows like many other movies depict. And for that, I loved it even more.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2014Believable, nuanced and beautifully filmed mid-life crisis about what happens to a family when a brilliantly talented musician does not get that he already has it all, the dream life in a gorgeous home and city, along with devoted friends and students, and adoring family.
Maybe not an easy film for women to watch, though the film itself is quiet eye candy, scene after scene. Multiple betrayals that *do* result in actual consequences. Guy Pearce adds a new film genre --adult drama-- without violence, and all about what family means, to his extraordinary career.
If I were a marriage counselor or shrink, I would make this quietly brilliant, non-sappy film REQUIRED WATCHING FOR COUPLES. It's never sappy, but shows real consequences of the stupid choices we make that make us miserable. Kudos for no serious physical violence.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2020Worth a watch, pleasant in the sense that it tells a story like a teleplay. Has a couple flaws in execution but nicely stitched overall.
On the other hand, she's 18 by a couple months, so I guess I'm supposed to believe we're skirting the line of apologists for pedophilia normalization by a clear margin. I guess.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2018Every time I watch this movie I'm drawn in by the cinematography and score, which heighten the chemistry and tension between the lead actor and actress. This film is truly a guilty pleasure for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2015The way the ending played out was disappointing.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2015This movie succeeds in giving you what you want and leaving you frustrated at the same time. The "will-he-or-won't-he-give-in-to-temptation" plot is familiar, to be sure, but I thought the film had some nice surprises. Definitely worth watching.

3.0 out of 5 stars Film deludente
Pensavo meglio.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ganz okay...
