This job should be a piece of cake: former smuggler Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) gets dragged back into the game in order to make things right with a nasty New Orleans gangster (Giovanni Ribisi) over a debt owed by Chris's brother-in-law. So, Chris needs to smuggle in some goods on a cargo ship from Panama, pay the guy off, and return to a suburban life on the straight and narrow. No problem, right? What's fun about Contraband is that despite its hero's meticulous planning, all hell breaks loose in Panama City, where nothing goes as planned and where the cargo ship is, after all, due to disembark at a certain time, with or without him. Based on the Icelandic film Reykjavík-Rotterdam, this movie is full of stock characters and rancid dialogue, but the plot is so kicky and wild, it almost doesn't matter, at least for as long as the movie is on screen. Director Baltasar Kormákur (he produced the original film and directed the entertaining 101 Reykjavík) pumps up the action nicely, although the actors are on their own: Wahlberg contributes his customary solid center, which a movie like this needs, but Kate Beckinsale has nothing to do as his wife, and Ribisi and Ben Foster emote with reckless abandon. No one will mistake it for a classic, but Contraband has enough zip, and a few genuine surprises, to qualify it as a fun diversion. --Robert Horton

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2022Why do things always go south when you're forced to do something? Will he get caught? Who is stabbing him in the back and will he find out in time?
A typical plot but very well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2012Download it. Buy it. Just get it. This is Taken on steroids. Here's the thang. 1. Mark Wahlberg's character loves his wife and children. And, by extension, he loves her family and will do anything to protect them. 2. I love his I'm bad (in the best way) and I know it, don't mess with my family or else, old-school character and portrayal. Shout out to Mr. Wahlberg and the writers. 3. There's not one moment that won't keep your attention centered on the physical, psychological, emotional charges of this film. 4. If you've ever, ever chosen to do something because you were trying to save someone you love from reaping the negative consequences of their dumber than dumb decision, or if you've ever seen someone else you know who's done it, you'll get this film. 5. I love loyalty. And family loyalty is a beautiful thing -- sometimes had to live with, but at it's core -- beautiful. ALL these things and more are in the film. All the actors rock. You forget they're acting. They become the part. They are their characters.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2022I like the action and violence. I like the shooting. I like the punching and kicking.
I like the fast car action. I like the story. I like the big ship and the helicopters.
Very complicated so I enjoyed trying to keep up with the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2012To echo the words of another reviewer, if you are a Wahlberg fan and enjoy the heist genre, this movie is passably viewable. I might be a bit more critical if I had shelled out some serious coin and watched this in the theater, but as a rental I don't regret the $4.99. Wahlberg is his usual frowny, muscley self, not much change here- but this is how I like my Wahlberg, full of quiet angst and muted emotions (sans rage of course). Beckinsale's performance was pretty vanilla, enough so that I forgot that it was her until I came back to write this.
In sum, it is worth a rental if you like this kind of genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars DESPERATION AND DECEIT
This impressed me a lot, enough action to keep the interest, great storyline and top acting.
This family man, leaving his criminal past behind is forced back into it when his brother in-law bothces a deal.
Things get heavy very soon and he realizes he has to get togeher a gang he can trust to help pull off one major job.
There's a quite a bit of backstabbing as the film goes one and you are left wondering just who can be trusted and who's in on what.
Okay,it's over the top,but it's done in impressive style. Maybe it's not the most original, but it's great entertainment, leaving me satisfied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spannender Actionthriller mit Wahlberg als Schmuggler
Also alles enthalten was einen guten Film ausmacht.
- Unter dem Radar: Making of Contraband (sehenswerte 17 Minuten Making of)
