- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024I want to preface by saying that the film is packaged well and the dvd itself does have subtitles that translate Korean. There’s also options to change the picture zoom to have it go from normal, full size, and then zoomed in. With that out of the way, I’d like to talk a bit about the film. I originally had a vague idea of what I was getting myself into but nothing could’ve prepared me for the tears that followed. This film makes you cry (in a good way) due to how much adversity the main character endures. It does a good job of painting a picture of what Koreans faced during the Korean War and shows the transformation of South Korea as well. I’d highly recommend this film! It’s probably the best Korean movie I’ve seen to date.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2018The evacuation of the X Corps from the port of Hungnam, with the1st Marine, 3rd and 7th Divisions (under the overall command of General Douglas MacArthur) fighting heroic rear-guard actions that stopped three Chinese corps in their tracks, occurred on Christmas Day 1950. Called a "second Dunkirk." Hungnam however remains unheralded, virtually unknown to this day outside of Korea, and darn more spectacular in its outcome compared to iconic Dunkirk. Some even go as far as to say that divine providence has indeed radiantly cast its protective wings over the evacuees on that fateful Christmas of 1950 as it did in WWII over the stranded Allies fleeing Dunkirk.
Here is a comparison between Dunkirk and Hungnam:
DUNKIRK 841/ 163 Total Ships/ Sunk; 338,000 Personnel Evacuated; 0 Tons Salvaged
HUNGNAM 163/ 0 Total Ships/ Sunk; 205,000* Personnel Evacuated; 350,000 Tons and 17,500 Vehicles Salvaged
Let's hope we have more films like "Ode to My Father" celebrating this splendid day - a sanguine moment that demonstrates to the world the sacrifice, bravery, fraternal bond, perseverance and devotion to freedom - and to God by both American/UN allies and Korean civilians, combatants and civilian refugees. Among the 100,000 desperate refugees are the parents of the current president of the Republic of Korea. President Moon Jae-in's mom and dad sailed to safety on board the USS Meredith. President Moon was born three years later. The American officer of that ship, depicted in the movie as furiously trying to get as many refugees on board as possible, later entered the priesthood. Hope in Hungnam: A Novel of the Korean War
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2017I bought in 2017 and specifically the DVD with a region code that can play on US machines. It works fine.
I appreciated the subtitles making it clear to English speakers some of the more subtle interactions, like his short meeting with who would later be the founder of a major conglomerate, that could have been lost on people outside Korea. I was glad the war scenes were not too long. I preferred the main couple in other movies. I love the director included Hwang Jung-min's trademark dance style in this movie. The best part was the when they were trying to find relatives in the 1980's. Those scenes made the movie worth watching. What struck me was not only was this man's children oblivious to what he went through his younger brother and sister also seemed quite sheltered and selfish as well. I would have liked to know more of the Yunjin Kim's character's story. Jung Jin-Young, Kim Seoul Gi and Ra Mi-ran performed well.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2017It shows struggle of my father's generation
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2022One of the best films I have ever seen!!! I love Korean films/tv series' and I had to add this to my collection.
The lead actor can play anything!! This is worthy of all rewards! As many times I've seen this, it's fresh and
emotional.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2020The family struggles, the desperate situations of war, survival, post war poverty, the incredible sacrifices of the people, and the bond of family that holds them together through the years. You see the generational divides, the collapse of family "values' with new riches and growing prosperity. This is a MUST SEE if you want to understand post war Korea.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2022Captures the history and heart of South Korea's post war generation. Their sacrifice is what paved the way for South Korea's success today. Incredible acting and writing. Ultimately, this is a story about family. Anyone interested in Korean culture should watch this.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2016After I played Dumbo for my wife to show her a sad moment from my childhood, she had me watch Ode to my Father - she is Korean. I normally think of myself as a hard-knocks kind of guy, but I was totally shutup. I was blown away on a complete roller-coaster. This movie will correct your perspective and make you thankful for what you have. A great movie. The US university students looking for a "safe space" should see this movie. Also the opening minutes of Shiri.
