The Love Witch Casts AND Reels In!
5 out of 5 stars
The Love Witch Casts AND Reels In!
Got this as one of three movies for my wife for her birthday, the other two being The Craft and Dirty Dancing. Needless to say it was the perfect combo of three movies for her. The movie itself was very surprising in terms of detail, and also hitting the nail on the head In terms of recreating the long lost art and feel of old school sexy horror romps that can only be achieved by the intentional bad acting and extremely meticulously articulated costumes and set design. There was even a lot of representation of practical and actual practice of the arts. Lots of homework done and it shows in this throwback from recent history. Special features were a decent little cherry on top as well, especially the trailer and behind the scenes footage of the sorceress.. I mean the Director, Anna Biller. The best way to say it, this very full moon feature sure hit the spot!

This is a artistic visual MASTERPIECE. Anna Biller did an incredible job at completely replicating the look and feel of a vintage 1960s/1970s "horror" film. Although the story does take place in 2016, between the beautifully curated sets and props used throughout the film transform you back to a different time, my brain has a hard time accepting this as fact. Not to mention the wardrobe! (Insert drooling Goofy GIF) The dresses, robes and the sensual, feminine, sexy matching lingerie sets worn by the main character Elaine are enough to fill any modern witch with pure style envy and make you (almost) want to start wearing thigh high stockings with a matching garter, bra and panty set on a daily basis. And if the wardrobe is not enough to make you want to scour the internet and blow your life's savings on similar versions of every single thing Elaine wore on screen, her apartment will without a doubt have you re-thinking everything you thought Pinterest taught you about "witchy home decor". The colors, paintings, THE RED PENTAGRAM CARPET. (That the director made by hand, and I now cannot live without.) Every item in Elaine's apartment was very clearly chosen with care and consideration. Anna Biller did her research and without a doubt read a book of shadows or two because her perception of the modern witch is, in my opinion, very accurate. Although witchcraft is a spiritual journey with multiple paths one may take she took the basics and wove them into the main character Elaine as well as her coven and friends Barbara and Gahan. This film has a strong feminine message at its core and I really feel any witch out there will absolutely love it. Now with all of my praise I must mention this, some of the acting is fairly cringeworthy at times and almost makes you clench your teeth and cover your eyes. But the writing, artistic vision and style are definitely there and shine through. I highly recommend! Bright Blessings!

OMG what a film! My buddy and I are real film buffs and we watched this one week after I finally got to show him the Criterion release of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and if you loved that film you will love the Love Witch. For one, this movie has technology and car types that could place it in some era but as a whole the movie seems more like a fantastic graphic novel made into film. I am seriously in love with Samantha Robinson and her character Elaine. She is supposed to represent a female ideal and a femme fatale archetype and does it flawlessly. The film's director apparently made most of the clothing and decorated the sets and both of those are incredible. The opening shots show the film medium this film was filmed on and it looks like the great films of the 60s and 70s. You cannot take your eyes off of Elaine and the film blesses you by giving you shot after lovely shot of her in various hairstyles and states of dress. The sex scenes are fairly non revealing in contrast to scenes of rituals that have full frontal nudity of both men and women. The other main characters and the supporting cast did such good acting as I am sure they loved working on it. The acting is done in Presentation style....and I must say Samantha Robinson's acting as Elaine seemed to me to be inspired by Joan Holloway from Madmen as played by Christina Hendricks. The story itself is great and has aspects of kooky humor similar to David Lynch films and then can be coldly serious. Shocking things happen throughout the film and scene after wondrous scene grace your lucky eyeballs. Watch this film and I dare you to not fall in love with the Love Witch.

I think I watch this at least 2-3 times a month. Hands down a favorite of mine. I love the feminist undertones. The cinematography is top notch!

It's called irony, satire, parody, sarcasm and it's absolutely brilliant! Thankfully, I read another reviewer's comments and had an idea of what to expect before I went on the ride. This is really quite brilliant and so very well done ( all the way down to the cookie - eating). I too, might have been put off, but this was good fun and you can leave your brain in the freezer. Grab an old Vincent Price movie or any "horror" movie of that time...or even later. They would follow this formulaic weirdness that would make me go cross-eyed and confuse me for days! ( These movies were old and I was too young to understand, winki face). You will wonder if this was actually made "back in the day" until someone picks up a cell phone! Then, of course the colors and strange angle-shots are so crisp and vibrant, you'll know it's a brand-spanking new film! This was made to mimic those older films and was great fun to watch! This is about a production that followed every rule from that "period"...but it wasn't made in "that period", and I  find that genius! The plot, well, it's not that important, but it's there, makes sense, and keeps you engaged... How unexpected!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Love Witch - Ein echter Hingucker mit Tiefgang!
Reviewed in Germany on December 2, 2023

I think it's an easy-going film...not at all a horror movie!! , the retro esthetic is great...and the actress Samantha Robinson is so gorgeous that we could enjoy the film just because she's there...the movie's got some philosophical opinions and thoughts about women , witchcraft, love and feminism, which I thought interesting, but it's not a philosophical movie either. If you are into weird movies no doubt you will like this one, I enjoyed this movie and I recommended it for those who like..." different , strange or weird movies"
