Product Description

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean, Swept Away (1974) is Lina Wertmu ller's most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On an elegant yacht cruising off the coast of Sardinia, Raffaella (Mariangela Melato), a rich and stunning capitalist, enjoys tormenting Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini), a Communist sailor. Fate weaves a different scenario and roles become reversed when the two find themselves stranded together on a deserted island. Raffaella must submit to Gennarino in order to survive, which culminates in a dramatic climax when they are rescued. They must determine if their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.

Alongside Seven Beauties, Wertmuller at her best

I had not seen this movie in 20 years so I was happy to find a blu ray version on Amazon at a reasonable price. The quality was excellent considering it was from 1974. We had a little Italian party with Pizza and Amarone and laughed so hard.

One of the greatest Italian filmmakers. This and Seven Beauties (which is harder to watch due to Holocaust portrayal) are Lina Wertmüller's best. Wonderful take on class/income/gender inequality and role reversals. Stay away from the remake.

I've never liked dialogue by the "bad Italian dubbers union, but that doesn't count against the vendor.

This is one of my favorite foreign movies. So why 4 and not 5 stars? I'm rating the Blu-ray, not the film. I own the regular DVD, and it is so soft and grainy as to make it almost unwatchable on a big screen. This Blu-ray is definitely a huge improvement. This Blu-ray, however, does not get you crystal clear images. The initial scenes with the entire group are very soft, for a Blu-ray, but the later scenes with the two alone on the island come off clearer and cleaner. The fact is I worked in a movie theater way back when the movie was initially out in the theaters, and I saw this movie about 50-100 times and I recall "clearly" the original film was extremely soft and grainy. If you're hoping this movie is dubbed in English, it is not. If it were, you would miss the rhythm of Italian which helps add the the comedic element of this film. Also, there are some extras but not the huge extras one would hope for. The sound is 2.0. Still, it is worth the price if you love this film and watch a watchable version of it. I'll watch this one over and over. Don't even talk about the nightmarish Madonna remake of this film. Do not expect an incredible, reference quality picture.

What more can you say about this classic? Haunting, beautiful, thought-provoking and yes immensely funny, touching and sad. I think of this film as a perfect companion piece to her equal classic Seven Beauties, which we used to see on a double bill at the revival houses for years. These two represent Wurtmiller's apex and height. Her other films are ok, but she never again approached this level of greatness, as her mentor Fellini never made any two films any better than these two.
Looking very much forward to the Blue Rays!

This is one of my favorite films of all time and I'm so glad there's an improved transfer of the film to Bluray. I notice in particular how much detail was lost in early DVD transfers from the wide ocean/boat shots. I probably wouldn't even leave a review of this if it was an authentic transfer, but I was shocked to discover that a key moment in the soundtrack (as spoiler-free as possible, the first physical clash on the island) was changed to a completely different music cue. What was dramatic and tense in the original was rendered comic and trivial, to the point where I'd rather pull out my DVD with the correct soundtrack than play this for a friend who's never seen the movie. What a shame.
