Product Description
Manufacturing just 50 grams of meth in China will earn you a death sentence. Timmy Choi (Louis Koo) just got caught making tons. Now he's in the custody of Captain Zhang (Sun Honglei), and has one chance to avoid execution - turn informant and help the cops bring down the powerful cartel he's been cooking for. Over the next 72 sleepless hours, the sting spins out of control, the line between duty and recklessness is blurred, and it becomes unclear who actually has the upper hand. From Johnnie To, master of the Hong Kong crime thriller, comes an unnerving thrill ride through the modern criminal underworld.

About the Actor
Deemed as one of the best actors in China, Sun Hong-Lei first started out as a band lead singer, performing in pubs back in his hometown, Harbin. After graduating from The Central Academy of Drama, Sun first acted in various stage dramas. His outstanding performances landed him his breakthrough role in his first TV drama, Yongbu Mingmu, where he successfully portrayed an assassin. He then went on to star in internationally acclaimed director Zhang Yimou¡¯s The Road Home. His versatility and ability of ¡°disappearing¡± into his roles has earned him various best actor awards.
About the Director
With over thirty directing and producing credits to his name, Johnnie To enjoyed international breakthroughs with Election, Triad Election (aka "Triad Election") and Exiled; those films enjoyed multiple international film festival appearances and were separately sold to more than 21 foreign territories (including theatrical distributions in France and USA). Stretching from the height of the Hong Kong New Wave right up to today, über-filmmaker Johnnie To could be considered an institution in the former British colony. Johnnie To's Milky Way production company, which he formed in partnership with frequent collaborator Wai Ka-fai in 1996, has become the de facto hallmark of quality filmmaking in Hong Kong since the Handover in 1997. His filmography is an eclectic collection of films from almost every genre and featuring almost every major Hong Kong film star, including classic films from the late Eighties and early Nineties including Heroic Trio (1993) & All About Ah-Long (1989), some ultra-cool crime-noir productions during the late Nineties; The Longest Night, Expect the Unexpected, and The Mission. Romances; Loving You (1995) & Needing You (2000). As well as a number of crowd-pleasing comedies; Wu Yen (2001) and Love on a Diet (2001). Unfortunately, the 'Jerry Bruckheimer of Hong Kong' has been in a creative and financial lull since 2001. In addition to facing diminishing box office returns stemming from the overall decline of the Hong Kong film industry, some of To's recent efforts have performed disappointingly, such as Fat Choi Spirit (2002), Full-Time Killer (2001), and Running Out of Time 2 (2001). However, in 2003, the veteran filmmaker was back in fine form with the release of PTU (2003), a crime-noir thriller, and Running on Karma (2003), about a body builder/exotic dancer with special visions that helps a cop track a vicious killer. These were both award winners at the Hong Kong Film Awards that year. These were followed closely by Breaking News (2004) & Throw Down (2004), then Election (2005) and follow-up Election 2 (2006), the award nominated companion piece.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2019Unless you are satisfied with comic book social-justice-warrior superheroes, endless re-makes of former classics or tiresome life stories of conflicted guilt ridden suburbanites you are probably going to have to go global when searching for movies to entertain yourself in 2019... and beyond.
DRUG WAR is directed by the legendary Johnnie To. Check out his resume online as a director or producer if you are interested in films with original ideas that are brilliantly executed.
This particular movie, DRUG WAR is a smart, well written, beautifully acted and filmed action thriller with a violent and surprising climax. This is the kind of movie that Hollywood is unfortunately no longer capable of manufacturing and presenting to its audience. The closest movie from Hollywood that might be compared to this flick would be SICARIO I think. Unfortunately even that worthy film probably could not be made today by a mainstream Hollywood infected with political correctness.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2014This is one of Johnnie To's latest gritty Hong Kong dramas. It exudes the classic genre of HK action films but brings in a new layer of sophistication and modern reality. I have been watching his (Johnnie To) movies for a long time and he seems to surprise me once again. It is a little violent and has mature themes but they serve a purpose, to keep the plot moving along nicely. I recommend this film if you are a HK movie buff or if you are as tired of Hollywood predictability that plagues the US film industry as I am.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2021Hahahaha there is actually a character in this hahahaha movie named HaHa and most of his dialogue consists of hahaha! haha! hahahahaha! which is maybe hahaha funny the first 40,000 times you hear it and after that it gets hahaha a little tedious! Hahaha!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2021The actress and actors are top notch. The endings has left me to ponder about the cruelty of drug trafficking. but above all, man is willing to risk everything to be alive.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2017Looks like a good movie. Unfortunately, English subtitles do not seem to be available.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021A realist approach with super actors. The ending is great because that is in fact the reality of drug war everywhere -- no one wins.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2014The movie was okay, but could have been better because it long, and drawn out. The entire movie was in a foreign language with English sub titles at the bottom. It was very slow throughout most of the movie, then it picked up. There was plenty of action, but you kind of lost interest as to what the storyline was. I would not recommend it unless someone had the movie and you borrowed it from them.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2020Oh my goodness best ever international psychilogical thriller movie I've ever seen. Although subtitled after you watch it over again you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eiskalt wie Fürst Pückler:
Zwar bin ich unrettbarer Fan der alten Eastern, die in den verrotteten Bahnhofkinos flimmerten und Titel hatten, die allein schon Lachsalven verursachten, aber diese Zeiten sind lange vorbei und auch vor Bob Dylan wusste man doch:“The Times they are a-changing...“!
