- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2012This is THE modern B movie for those new to this genre to watch. It is so bad, but so good. This is actually the movie that got me excited about these type of movies. Since then I have been inspired by Roger Corman, who I hadn't even heard of until seeing Sharktopus (hey don't boo me, movie buffs!).
A caveat: I think bad reviews come with people that don't know what to expect. If you come in to the tv room expecting a serious drama about man versus beast and the allegorical philosophy of how it applies to everyday life you are going to be sadly disappointed. If you want grade A effects, expecting the explosions and 3d to be on par with Transformers, you will be sadly disappointed. I could go on.
However, if you come into the TV room ready to laugh, ready to have fun, and to make fun of what happens on screen, you will love this movie. You've got to think of it as a comedy, not a horror. I personally find it funnier than 95% of movies labelled comedy. It's great fun to sit down with a group of friends and pick out the movie screw ups, the plot holes, while making fun of the quirky characters.
Sharktopus itself is a crazy premise, and if you realize that you will come to appreciate the real creative and fun ideas in the movie. I really enjoy the creative ways sharktopus kills its victims. That's what makes a B-movie, creative death scenes. In this movie you not only got sg-1 snatching chicks off bungee jump cords but much more I won't spoil for you.
Yes, there are plot holes, things that don't make sense, and I could go on. But the graphics are above par for a b-movie, the acting is so bad it is fun (it gives the characters even more "depth" in their own quirky way that only Corman could pull off), and some of the scenes are just plain awesome.
Get in the right mindset and you'll love this movie. If you have an aversion to fun go add to rotten tomatoes with the other critics.
If you are new to B movies, here's some other similar movies you might enjoy:
*Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus
*Dinoshark
*Mongolian Death Worm
If you are like me, you might wish to read books in this "genre" (which doesn't really exist in books). If so, you might consider the book When Land Sharks Attack!.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2013Half shark half octopus this is something I have always wanted to see in a movie and surprise I found this. Eric Roberts plays as I call his character the loony frankenstein like scientist who with the help of his daugtter through gene splicing creates this lean mean constantly hungry killing machine that was originally created to take down the enemy in war, boats full drug runners etc. The control collar around its neck breaks freeing the ferocious beast setting him loose on the unsuspecting public and soon it's an all you can eat buffet.
Unlike sharks in the Jaws movies Sharktopus has an unfair advantage he can reach out his about 20 foot long arms up well past the shore line up onto the beach grabbing people dragging the into the water and eating them, eek. One of the things I first noticed is in between his shark gills are spikes like a sea urchin and pointed it out to my friend sure enough later on we found out that unknown to Eric Roberts daughter he had without telling her went behind her back and added some extra gene splicing ftom another species to the mix. The tips of sharktopuses octopus arms are actually hard shaped like spear spear heads and using them like spears he can puncture things and also skewer living things like orderves on a stick and eat them
I teased my friend damn he's a racist he is half shark I joked when sharktopus ate a regular shark muwhahaha, this movie is unique and puts a different spin on the man eating terrorizing the humans shark movies.it is really different and I quite enjoyed it. I think it was very well written, great special effects, it has a nice level of creepiness, I love ( Eric Roberts ) dude excellently plays both bad, and good guys. Sure it has some cheesiness here and there but cheesy can be hilarious, you'll see what I mean when it gets to the part where a using a metal detector girl on the beach finds an old gold coin watch the old dude standing there and see what happens I was like WT? then we cracked up
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2023Sharktopus Beloved.
Every man in this movie sucks but in fairness pretty much every woman in this movie ALSO sucks, so it kinda evens out. Sharktopus is a delightful classic Asylum monster and listen the CGI isn't /amazing/ but it's honestly NOT that bad. Sharktopus is just lacking enrichment in its normal environment and it deserves to go on a little bit of a murder rampage, as a treat.
The kill count in this movie? Fantastic. The amount of characters that exist purely as filler scene shark fodder is hilarious and amazing. The random shots of Mexico with mariachi music over it. The random stunt people and dancers that got dragged into this to add to the body count. It's just such a movie.
We look forward to the sequel because if we remember correctly Sharktopus vs. Pterocuda is basically a horse girl movie combined with murder animals.
9.5/10 classic Asylum <3

5.0 out of 5 stars Silly but fun
A secret military project goes out of control and before you can say "ooh, what a big fishy thing", a giant killer shark is on the rampage. But this is a shark with a difference. Even if you escape the water you're still not safe.
There are more shark films out there than there are fish in the sea, so it's nice to see a shark movie which tries to be different. The Sharktopus with its octopus-like tentacles is an interesting design and a reasonably good CGI creation. As long as you don't take this film too seriously it's fun and highly entertaining. Eric Roberts also puts in a good performance as the required fanatical scientist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent nanar
Un super nanar comme on les aime, entre requin et pieuvre, Sharktopus nous régale.
En revanche, attention, très déçu, le cd était légèrement rayé car mal clipsé dans la boîte.
Dvd zone 2 mais pas de langue française.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ziemlich blutiger Trash...

4.0 out of 5 stars Stupid, fun B-movie
This is a stupid, fun creature flick. It promises a killer shark/octopus hybrid and it delivers. This might be my favorite Roger Corman flick. Good B-movie
