Product Description
Obsession and fate collide in one of the most controversial and provocative films ever made. English widow Anne Osborne (Ryan's Daughter's Sarah Miles) lives by the sea with her young son, Jonathan. The arrival of a rugged American sailor, Jim (Blade's Kris Kristofferson), brings Anne the joy and sensual fulfillment she thought had gone forever, but her son is disturbed by this new intruder and joins a perverse group of fellow students led by the charismatic Chief. With its disturbing shock ending and frank love scenes, this stylish adaptation of the novel by legendary writer Yukio Mishima has become a timeless classic, with stylish direction by Lewis John Carlino (The Great Santini), powerhouse performances, exquisite cinematography by the legendary Douglas Slocombe (Raiders of the Lost Ark), and a haunting score by Johnny Mandel (M*A*S*H). Beautiful, eerie, and erotic, this spellbinder has been restored from archival elements to its anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) glory.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2024I just finished reading the novel by Mishima and was really curious to see how they pulled this off, because the novel of course relies on a lot of interiorization. Overall I thought they did a pretty good job. The performances are very watchable, and they managed to convey the novel's main themes strictly through action and dialogue (with a few excerpts from the boy's journal). Moving it to a British setting worked well. Yes it is clearly from an earlier era of filmmaking, but anybody looking this up would already be aware of that.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Finally got to see this movie again after enjoying it when it first came out. Well acted, yet disturbing movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2020This is a very strange movie, about a lonely widow with a son who hangs out with a clique headed by a kid cult leader who thinks that once anyone hits puberty they should be put out of their misery, and a merchant sailor who stumbles into a situation that isn't quite as "natural" as he thinks. Anyways, anyone who had the misfortune to purchase the original Shout Factory! Blu-ray release of this film in 2012 should disabuse themselves of the notion that Shout heard the complaints and the 2017 re-release was meant to "correct" the issues--which included frequent off-color schemes and dark bedroom scenes in which it is almost impossible to make anything out when there isn't annoying pixelation. The "creation" dates for the 2017 release indicates that the transfers used were "created" in 2012. I contacted Shout for clarification and received this response: "Those are the only elements that we have been given access to for the movie and the only elements that at this time we can offer on a release." So why even bother? What is most aggravating is the fact that the now OOP Image Entertainment DVD is far, far superior to that Blu-ray release on all fronts.
OK. Now what about this new Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray version? One, it is a vast improvement over the previous iterations, not even close. Dark scenes (meaning the bedroom scenes) are now much clearer. No more red-tinted flesh tones. That said, there is almost no difference between the Image Entertainment DVD transfer and the Scorpion DVD, which suggests that the film element used was the same. That also means that while the new Blu-ray version is far, far better than the original Shout Factory release, it is only marginally superior to the DVD version. This new Blu-ray is obviously preferable if you want the best available presentation of this film, but that is a matter of how much you want to spend. I also noted that Shout Factory's logo is on the back cover; this suggests that after the fiasco of releasing such an awful Blu-ray of this previously, Shout Factory likely decided to give this to a different distributor, but kept the licensing rights. Shout Factory apparently learned a hard lesson, because although "word" hasn't gotten out to all retailers, they have pulled the Tattoo Blu-ray, originally scheduled for an August 25 release, from their pre-order schedule because, as an email I received from them states, they were not able to locate a film element suitable for an HD release.
By the way, this new release includes some interesting interviews, including one with Sarah Miles, who spends a bit of time talking about her masturbation scene, and how it "changed" her life. Interviews with two crew members suggest that the sex scene between Miles and Kris Kristofferson was "real," and the director admitted that he was worried at the time that some people on the set, as well as the "locals," thought he was making a "blue" movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2011The Sailor Who Fell F=from Grace with the Sea is to me an arthouse film. It will largely be bypassed by the general public and watched by those with an "arthouse" taste. That being said, why would the powers that be censor this movie. I saw the movie in a theater when it first came out and then again on VHS tape before it was available on DVD. At least one of the sexual scenes was omitted and and another chopped up I believe. It has been a long time. What I do know is that there were cuts of the sex scenebe between Kristofferson and Miles. I remember when I saw the movie there was a debate between the office staff as to whether they were really "doing it." It was that real and I believe they were. Where are the Criterion Collection people when we need them. While I do not believe Kristofferson is the greatest actor in the world, he did okay and the picture itself was great for the reasons set forth by othersPink Floyd: The Wall (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition).

- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2003This film was great it stuck in my head for years, I seen it on playboy magazine in 1977 and WOW!I could not believe the sex . It blew me away I neve seen anything like it ever. Then two years later I saw it in a second run theater the film story was something different at the time I was about 17 and I never seen a film like this before. So all these years I have been looking for this film. And now I could go back to that place in the darken theater an watch sarah & kris do what I rememberd the most about this film and the boy who played the son.I'll enjoy keeping this vhs but I hope it will be on dvd. It's a great film to thoughs who have seen it know what I am talking about I got my copy.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2009The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea is an erotic love story gradually transformed into gothic horror. It brings together a lonely widow, a jaded sailor and a group of boys straight out of The Lord of the Flies.
Scenes of graphic nudity and lovemaking along with an intense scene involving the boys and a cat make this a movie best suited for adults.
The scenery and photography provide a beautiful background for a very disturbing tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars 背景映像と人の心の美しさ、怖さを実感です。
「子供」の持っている純粋さと、「なにもの」をも拒む、ひたむきさ、意志の強さ、とその「怖さ」が、映像の美しさとあいまって考えさせる映画だと思います。
