Product Description
A young interracial couple move into their dream home and are increasingly harassed by their next-door neighbor, a tightly wound black LAPD officer. When the couple decides to fight back the feud turns deadly.
Amazon.com
The usually provocative Neil LaBute reigns in his more eccentric tendencies for this straightforward domestic thriller. Then again, LaBute, who divides his time between cinema and theater, didn't write the material. The bad vibes begin when Chris (Patrick Wilson) and Lisa Mattson (Kerry Washington) move in next door to widowed cop Abel Turner (Samuel L. Jackson, as nasty as Aaron Eckhart in LaBute's In the Company of Men). A strict father of two, Turner works in a diverse unit (Jay Hernandez plays his partner), but takes less kindly to interracial relationships. From the start, he makes the Mattsons uncomfortable with inappropriate remarks and unwarranted intrusions, like the security light trained on their bedroom, under the guise of self-appointed neighborhood guardian. Initially, Turner's actions exacerbate the tensions between the seemingly happy pair--Lisa wants to start a family, Chris wants to wait--until they realize they'll have to work together to protect themselves from their troubled neighbor. And since he's a member of the LAPD, Turner's colleagues have his back, despite the break-ins and flat tires bedeviling the Mattsons. When they make it clear they intend to stay, Turner takes his harassment campaign to the next level. The A-list cast does what they can, but the B-movie script from Howard Korder and Passenger 57's David Loughery, offers few surprises--at least to those who've seen Fatal Attraction and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle--and LaBute's by-the-books direction lacks its usual bite. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2017SAM JACKSON IS '''UNCOMFORTABLE - FEELING''' IN THIS MOVIE ABOUT A COP VERY SIMILAR TO THE ONES WE TALK ABOUT TODAY THAT SHOOT PEOPLE INSTEAD OF GIVING THEM A TICKET. AS BEST WE CAN TELL, SAM'S CHARACTER IS ANGRY BECAUSE HIS WIFE HAS DIED??? This question is a very crucial point in the story-line of this movie and closes the show for us.
And so. There Sam is, in character, lying on the ground. And we are to go over the points in the story to try and figure out ; WHAT IS HIS PROBLEM? WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM AND WHY? AND, we are left with the question: Did he think about his kids? Did he put them first?
And we conclude that if he had put his kids first he wouldn't be on the ground.
WE LOVE SAM JACKSON. WE DO. WE DO. WE DO. AND IF HE IS VIOLENT WE LIKE IT BUT ONLY IF HIS VIOLENCE IS DONE ON OUR BEHALF AS OUR HERO. '''''OUR HERO''''': heroics for us. WE HURT WHEN SAM IS NOT DOING FOR US, WHEN SAM IS BEING A SELFISH FIEND. WE DON'T WANT TO HATE SAM JACKSON. WE WANT TO LOVE HIM SO IF HE IS WILD AND OUT OF SORTS WE WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS DOING AND SOMEWHERE IN ALL THAT IS LAUGHTER. WE LOVE TO LAUGH WITH SAME.
HOKES! FOOLISHNESS! BRAVADO! RULE-BREAKER! A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH: ''''SAM IN THE MOVIES''''.
I have re-visited this movie three times now.
I give this movie 5-stars because I know it was done well. But I hurt seeing MY Sam in a role he performs with such clarity that it feels like its happening to me in that moment.--Margaret Opine

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2023If you like Samuel L Jackson…he’s a great villain in this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2009This is a straight-forward thriller with no real big surprises. It has been done before in several film and now Sam L Jackson gets a shot on playing a bad guy. First, Sam's character isn't evil. He is actually a loving father, unfortunately he gets a kick out of being an authority figure. He is a blue collar guy who has a white collar couple (yuppies) move next door and he seems to have a real problem with that.
What I did like, is the husband's take on the whole black and white couple thing and how he felt being under society scrutiny as if he has something to prove.
I bought this blu-ray because I am a Sam L Jackson fan, the movie looks interesting and it is interesting, and just because it's a typical thriller (in my book) doesn't mean its not enjoyable. It is. The disc comes with some special features and the one I watched were the deleted scenes. You can tell why they were deleted. Some gave away too much too early and one particular scene, if kept in, wouldn't make sense. Lakeview Terrace is not a movie that needs to be seen on blu-ray. There are no special efx shots, or not real big majestic scenery scene, but since I have a blu ray, and a fan of Sam L, I decided to get it. This is a recommende rental in my book. Once seen, no real need to see it again. This isn't a bad movie, is not a great movie, but just and above average good movie. You've seen this plot/storyline done better in other films, but it didn't bored me. I wasn't looking at my watch to see how much longer. And it does look good in blu-ray format.

5.0 out of 5 stars SAMUEL L. JACKSON AT HIS BEST
Samuel L. Jackson gives one of his best performances ever, in this dark psychological thriller.
A couple move into a new home, and are soon terrorized by their new neighbour, who has a thing about mixed race couples, who just happens to be a cop, who believes he is above the law. SLJ normally plays likeable characters, not always the good guy, but likeable. But in this movie, it shows he is not typecast and you begin to dislike the character, which is a total role reversal for him.
You get drawn into the film, as the plot develops, and begin to wonder how its gonna end. It has some characterisation, which is rare in films today.
The picture quality on this blu ray is outstanding, with good black levels, and although the sound won't test your system too much, its there when needed, with good separation to the rears.
Just hope your new next door neighbour isn't a cop....

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense at the lakeview
Samual Jackson portrays a police officer who's life is crashing in front of him, being consummed by anger and a need to be in control of life and his family. A cop who was good at his job, but who's increasing anger with his life, slowly spirals out of control. His acting truly beings a realistic feel to the story. The ending has a dramatic twist that I never expected and truely the film is worth watching for its drama and suspense.
