Product Description
The Seattle grunge band in concert in New York City on the 18th November 1993 for MTV's Unplugged season.
Amazon.com
With Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl could've shaped this material into a sappy tribute. On the contrary, as they state in the opening inter-title, "Though circumstances did not allow for the piece to be completed by those who forged its original vision, great care was taken to maintain the integrity and intent of the original edit." Consequently, viewers get a warts and all glimpse of Nirvana as they were, both in concert and off-stage. Live! isn't just a reminder that the Northwest trio was a great band, but that they knew how to have a good time, regardless as to the demons eating away at their frontman. This means Cobain performing in a negligee, clad in a garish gown for MTV's Headbanger's Ball, and stumbling through Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion." Other numbers stem from Bleach and Nevermind, with locations ranging from Seattle to Rio de Janeiro (the five bonus selections are from Amsterdam). In most cases, songs incorporate footage from different shows. Highlights include "Dive," "Territorial Pissings," and an out-of-control "Love Buzz," during which Cobain is attacked by a bouncer--and fights back. The "lowlights" are a screechy version of "Come as You Are" and purposefully sluggish "Smells like Teen Spirit." By this point, the hit had became a burden and the threesome weren't about to pretend otherwise. As Grohl puts it, "For a lot of people, it's like the only Nirvana song, and that's upsetting." This long-awaited DVD reissue features color correction and digitally re-mastering. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Obsessed with Nirvana and this was a perfect opportunity to add to my collection of the best band ever. Kurt Cobain was and always will be a rock legend with a beautiful soul.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2016This video captures the band at its apogee. Free-spirited and raw. My favorite part is during the live "Love Buzz" when Kurt stage dives and the bouncer paid to protect him tries to bring him back. Kurt slams him in the head with his solid wood guitar, splitting the man's scalp open. When the bouncer tries to pummel Kurt, the band steps in and stops him. Kurt picked a fight and couldn't finish it. Kurt was a pussy!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2004This is a pretty cool tape of live Nirvana. I liked it a lot. It's based on the songs from "Nevermind," but there are a few from "Bleach." My favorite would have to be the take on "Something In The Way," in my opinion that's the best song on the tape as far as the proformance goes.
I was a little disappointed with the take on "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Kurt purposly sang it different because that's the song everyone liked, and he they were kind of sick of playing it. Don't get me wrong the song wasn't bad, he just sang it more in the form of an Opra Singer, rather then in his own voice.
The back-stage footage and interviews are awesome! The video itself is worth buying just for that alone. - All-in-all, I rate this 4 Stars, the ending could have been better, as it just has Kurt crawling off the stage...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2019I have seen this before and it is amazing every nirvana fan should own it only thing I did not like when it arrived it was out of its cartridge which scratched it a bit but it still played perfectly.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022When trying to watch a Nirvana live concert dvd. Message came across tv screen said this disc can’t be played in your region????? What can’t watch a live concert in Mississippi?????? I would like another Nirvana dvd that will play same Dvd but one that will play
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2015I thought it was a great film. Pretty much just a compilation of Nirvana playing live during the Nevermind era. Plus interviews, tv spots, and news reports. It was a film originally conceived by Cobain himself, but was eventually completed by Krist and Dave. Great great film.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2005Not even her Mom! There is a reason this is not on DVD, the same reason their unplugged performance is not on DVD. Courtney "I am an attention starved crack wh#@%" Love won't release the rights to let them be produced on DVD. And for what? To pi@# everyone off? I guess that's a good enough reason for her. Why couldn't Dimebag be alive now and this wretch dead?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nirvana mit allen Widersprüchen, Höhen und Tiefen
Essentiell! Freudentränen! Himmlisch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but very sad
I owned this as a 15 year old generation x-er who was obssessed with Nirvana and watched it all the time completely unaware of what it actually depicts.
If you were a fan back in the day then get this: it is the last time a genuine musical act made it big and when long hair and being trashy wasn't some pre packaged emo crap that every one in or insert the name of any pseudo-relevant student town was wearing. The best bits are the bits that would never be allowed today - Territorial Pissings instead of Lithium on The Jonathan Ross show, mimed Teen Spirit on TOTP. These are the acts of a band who, despite of course actually wanting to be successful, were trying to genuinely make a point as to the percieved plasticity of the ever evil 'industry'.
The thing about this though is that you totally understand what happened to KC, as a kid I wasn't deep enough but it shows someone who has strong beliefs and a clear ethic being ruined by success. Its clihe I know but it's true. They look so lost at those massive arena shows when they are clearly much more suited to smaller venues.
In summary, this was a great visit back to my days of learning their entire back catalogue on guitar and giving pretend concerts in my bedroom but mostly served as a big slap in the face. Never again will genuinely passionate guitar music be so hugely in the media spotlight. It is sad that we are stuck now with bands like Oasis, Kings of whatever, Razorblah, the Killers or whatever nonsense is purged annually into the embarrasingly overblown 'alternative' scene.
It is a great watch and essential to anyone who ever was into them.
