Synopsis:
Lawyer Caspar Leinen (Elyas M'Barek) is confronted with a spectacular case when appointed by the court as a defense counsel: 70-year-old German-Italian Fabrizio Collini (Franco Nero) has killed the respected industrial magnate Hans Meyer (Manfred Zapatka) in his hotel suite, seemingly without motive. For Caspar, there is much more at stake than his first big case as a defense lawyer: the victim is the grandfather of his childhood sweetheart Johanna (Alexandra Maria Lara) and was a surrogate father to him in his youth. In addition, Caspar has an adversary in his former criminal law professor and legendary defense lawyer Richard Mattinger (Heiner Lauterbach), who has been appointed the joint plaintiff representative. The case quickly becomes a high-profile event, as Collini refuses to divulge his reason for taking out Meyer. And as Caspar dives deeper and deeper into the case, he not only is confronted with the troubled past of the family he thought he knew so well, but he also uncovers one of the biggest judicial scandals in German history.
Based on the international bestseller by Ferdinand von Schirach, The Collini Case is a taut courtroom drama where the sins of the past must be laid bare before they can be forgiven, and the collective guilt of those responsible provides the framework for retribution.
- Two audio tracks included: English Dub and German with English subtitles

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2025amazing movie. it is based on a judicial travesty i never before knew about.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2024The plot starts off with too many Dickensian coincidences of zero-degrees of separation. But if you can get past that and willingly suspend your disbelief, the rest of the movie is very well crafted—the directing and actors are terrific. The denouements are intensely moving. And the historical core of the film gives a lesson on how fascism is not so easily excised from a society, but requires constant vigilance by those in the citizenry compelled to justice.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021The reason for taking the law into your own hands can be mighty, can be convincing, but it still isn't a good enough excuse. Granted a law was passed to let many skid past justice, and they did. But they didn't repeal it either. This fantastic movie should've been in German with dubbing as an option. I watch tons of foreign films. Know these actors' real voices, and am flabbergasted Americans can't tolerate subtitles when a foreign film is created in another country? Instead need it spoon-fed to them, which I have to say made viewing this weird. Few complained about the dialog which was probably dumbed down to make it easy for us Americans. Amazon, if you're going to invest in dubbing, invest in it being an option, and please leave the creative process alone. A great story told brilliantly. Loved the ending scene.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2021This is one of the GREATEST movies I've ever seen. Sadly, this is loosely based on a real criminal, and justice wasn't served.
This movie should be mandatory to every citizen on earth.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2021Loved this point of view on WW2.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2020Fantastic and brilliantly acted! Heart wrenching but so realistic!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020But this film builds to a powerful climax (consisting of several parts).
Saw the subtitled version, which I recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024Not what I expected. Non-dramatic. No intense moments.
