Product Description
Starring Italian horror veteran Ian McCulloch (Zombie Flesh Eaters), Contamination from director Luigi Cozzi (Starcrash, Hercules) is one of the brightest stars in the firmament of early ‘80s Italian splatter.
A cargo ship drifts up the Hudson River. Its crew: all dead, their bodies horribly mutilated, turned inside out by an unknown force. Its freight: boxes upon boxes of glowing, pulsating green eggs. It soon becomes clear that these eggs are not of this planet, and someone intends to cultivate them here on Earth. But who? And to what end?
Contamination takes the premise of Ridley Scott’s classic Alien and peppers it with exploding guts galore and dangerously infectious soundtrack from celebrated Italian prog-rockers Goblin (Deep Red, Suspiria).

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2015Ever since I saw this on VIdeo way back in the VHS boom of the early 80s, Contamination (Alien Contamination on VHS) has been one of my favorite of the 80s Italian Horror / Gore Rip-Offs (I mean Homage). While I will freely admit that this movie is not the best of its type, it's still a lot of fun. This Arrow Video release is without a doubt the finest version of this film available. The picture has never looked better and the soundtrack has been cleaned-up very nicely.
Arrow also includes a ton of very cool extras including a 2014 Q & A with director Luigi Cozzi and star Ian McCulloch and an interesting featurette with Goblin Keybordist Maurizio Guarini on the films music and the bands history recording many classic Horror soundtracks and so much more. Also comes with an awesome slipcover and 24 page collectors booklet.
I highly recommend this Blu-Ray for all fans of the film and fans of Italian Horror.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024It can be a fun movie it can also be a bit gory at times. The main thing is do not put any logic to the plot or situations that anybody is brought into. If you follow that rule, you can really enjoy it but if you put any type of logic into it, forget it. Just get it back popcorn get a drink and put on your dunce cap, and you really should like it
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2020I'm not able to watch this.
The first person being killed was sudden, and the special effects gore was too much for me.
Since I can't get past the first 30 minutes of Alien, I'm sure I can't watch this movie either and I'm not prepared to try..
There has to be a mama alien on board that ship, and I don't want to see her or what she does.
The location is the NY harbor prior to 911. If you are like me, seeing the twin towers sadly stirs bad memories.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2015Contamination is not a good movie. It's not silly or bad enough to be enjoyable as a cheesy camp curio, nor is it written, directed or performed well enough to be taken seriously (though it tries). It has its moments, mostly in the first act as the New York setting and crazy gore provide some 80's style thrills and some neat effects. The movie quickly travels to South America and the quality descends quickly at the same time. Long scenes of talking with poor dialog are everywhere, as is an endless scene where a character is locked in with the enemy but nothing happens for what feels like 10 minutes. For super die-hard sci-fi fans there is some stuff here to enjoy, but there are many other Italian knock-offs to look at before this one, not to mention all the classics from Hollywood or the UK.
If you're die-hard enough to collect this piece of 80's sci-fi horror however you will be rewarded with an amazing disc from Arrow Video. Arrow has been doing collectors editions of horror and exploitation films in the UK for years and almost all of them are worth getting a multi-region player for. Now they're slowly starting to release some stuff like Contamination in the US, and it's just as good as their other discs. The film looks fully restored (because it was) and you'll be quite happy with how modern and film-like the transfer is. The audio also sounds clear and crisp, which is great since the synth-rock score is one of the best parts of this film.
Extras aren't super long but like a Criterion release all of them are very worthwhile. We get a vintage making-of, an interview with the director in his native Italian, an interview with one of the composers in English, a truly great Q&A with director and star that is very funny and blunt, a great (but short) documentary on Italian knock-offs that mentions a lot of better films you should check out and finally a commentary by a Fangoria writer and super fan of the movie with a lot of trivia and anecdotes to share.
As disc media gets more niche we are seeing more and more labels taking over the duty of releasing catalog movies and hidden classics on blu-ray. Arrow Video is up there with the best of these labels, and they treated Contamination like Criterion would treat a Fellini movie. If you like Contamination this is a must-own. If you like 80's sci-fi to the point where you want them all then this is an amazing edition for one of the lesser movies of that genre. If you're a casual fan, I have to warn you away. Wherever you fall on this spectrum however, keep your eyes on Arrow Video. These guys are doing it right.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2019No 24 page booklet. That's right, so be warned...I just ordered this, and clearly on the back it states there is a "Fully-illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Chris Alexander". Mine didn't have this. And not sure if that was a limited run that only came with the booklet...?? Anyone know anything about this?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024Clearly an Alien knock off.... And that why I love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2017An entertaining foreign take on the original Alien. I remember first seeing this on Commander USA's Groovy Movies on the old USA network. Not the best acting sand the story has some plot holes, but overall it's a good watch.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020Cheesy trash cinema. Fans of Italian horror will enjoy this thoroughly. Everyone else should probably stay away from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Quality Product From Arrow
The movie might be crap but Arrow puts as much love into Contamination as to any of their classic film releases. My favorite is the transfer, the swanky slip that comes with the first printing, and the really informative commentary by FANGORIA editor Chris Alexander. Also amusing is the behind-the-scenes featurette "Notes on Science-Fiction Cinema" which has director Cozzi take us through the making of the film.
Now my pet peeve.....re-cycling scenes from other documentaries, mix matching them, cut and paste, and "making" new featurettes/documentaries; this is what you get here with "Imitation Is The Sincerest Form of Flattery: A Critical Analysis of the Italian Cash-In". They feel cheap and unprofessional. What Arrow have done here is just cut and paste from Calum Waddell's feature length documentaries "Eaten Alive! The Rise and Fall of the Italian Cannibal Film" (which can be found in 88Films release of ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST) and "42nd Street Memories: The Rise and Fall of America's Most Notorious Block" (also found in 88Films release of ANTHROPOPHAGOUS). Now, if you don't have those releases, or even Grindhouse blu-ray CANNIBAL FEROX, you won't know any better and find the information new and refreshing. I didn't and felt disappointed. But that's me, and you are you.
Despite that one hiccup I don't regret purchasing this directly from Arrow.
