    This movie has not been rated well, and although I was not very fond of the lead actor's role in this, Nicole did an amazing job bringing Gertrude Bell to life. I was captivated by her performance and the movie in general. To each his/her own I suppose. The setting was wonderful and the time period is not portrayed often or well in Hollywood IMHO. This movie brought that environment to clarity for that part of the world and the complicated nature and history of the Arab states can be deciphered.

    I heard nothing but negative reviews of "Queen of the Desert," and as I've been off Nichole Kidman movies recently (after the ghastly "Perfect Couple") I rather avoided it. However, after seeing the documentary about Gertrude Bell, "Letters from Baghdad," and considering "Queen" was directed by Werner Herzog, I watched it. It is not a boy's adventure film, not even a girl's adventure film, it's an adult's adventure film, and so not meant for people with short attention spans. It captures the pre-WWI atmosphere of Imperial Britain easily, and Kidman does a great job of making Gertrude Bell completely plausible in her infatuation first with Persia, and later with Arabia. Her romances are also within the realm of reality and not over-inflated with sentimentality or sappy music. I would not call the film austere, but it is restrained. The scenery is not that spectacular but enough to give you the idea of how beautiful it could be on the one hand, and how rough on the other. And still she persisted in going places in the desert no outsider had been to. That's the whole draw of the film. The unknown. And her love for two admirable men, both of whom are lost along the way, is presented as part of her development, and not the end point. She was born tough, and just got tougher. Her friendship with T.E. Lawrence is undistorted and very amusing, and there are no illusions about how the Middle East is going to dissolve.

    I thought Herzog was better than this. He makes many stabs at David Lean-like desert vistas that seem somehow desperate. The focus is on her two tragic love affairs and not on her profound influence on the structure of the present Middle East. Bell was a force of nature that this film reduces to a dabbler. Especially embarrassing is the final takeout as she and her camel waddle off into the desert, as the two brothers and future kings (that she installed) declare her in hushed breath, "the Queen of the desert."

    It was an amazing time, when five twenty-something expats determined our present Middle East.
