I've seen a lot of "cross USA" road trip movies, but this one goes across CANADA on a vintage Norton Commando so the scenery is quite different and downright GORGEOUS. Well acted and well written which was a bonus!

This was a serendipitous film for 2 expat Canadians to stumble upon while looking for a way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. It brought tears to my eyes on a couple different levels.

It's a true homage. The beautiful vistas and Canadian references provoked many warm smiles. Joshua Jackson shines as an uncertain, repressed, yet yearning protagonist. The strong contradiction of being raised in a content, conservative culture, but also in a country that allows for so much freedom and potential, is something to which many Canadians can relate.

It could even be seen as a subtle political statement: a portrait of a maturing country unsure of its current direction, too timid/apathetic to realize its ideals. I only hope we as a country can be strong in identity and path before things get dire and we end up hurting others... amoung other unintended consequences. Canada has the capacity to be extraordinary, it is apparent to most anyone. But also to be selfish and indulgent. One only hopes enough Canadians kissing the Stanley Cup is enough for the cancers to be kept at bay and, perhaps more importantly, that our explorers don't shrink from rejection.

So the film was great food for thought this Thanksgiving. Both superficial and deep ways to appreciate the country. Much gratitude to makers of this film, it really is a beautiful piece of art.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Though it had a bit too much of that hipster/indie feel, they managed to best that hindrance by giving us a great story with a setting that is too beautiful for words. I would DEFINITELY recommend this to people who are into film that is made to question the things we not only take for granted, but also just assume we want due too society's standards.

I'm not from Canada, nor have I ever been there, but after watching this movie, I really hope to some day get to experience all the scenic beauty of it. I would even myself like to do it by motorcycle.

I read most of the critiques people had AGAINST this film, and I'm not sure any of them actually held the merit of the film accountable. So far, the majority of complaints have been about the fact that some American actors were used. If that type of thing bothers you, then you must not understand the actual concept of acting and probably should just quit watching movies altogether. Another complaint has been that their was too much narration. I personally found that the narration added a unique dimension of flat humor and brought a quality of storytelling that allowed me to help relate more to Joshua Jackson's portrayal of the main character.

As I stated in the beginning, the only real deficit to this film was the hipster/indie feel. They tried to sometimes fit in poorer quality handheld shots and rough transitions to give it a bit more of an edgy touch, but it wasn't necessary as it drew away, in my opinion, from the emotional experience.

In all, I would keep this on my shelf next to other selections, like "The Lucky Ones", "Into The Wild" and "The Motorcycle Diaries"... I liked that much!

    Hope this was helpful.

I love Joshua and I try to get everything he is in that is on DVD. I do not think that he gets enough credit for his acting. I think he is very natural in the parts he plays. This movie is a good one to watch if you want to see some great country. I laughed and I cried watching this one. If you want to know everything about this movie read some of the other reviews that tell you every minute of the film. I don't like knowing every aspect of a film, I like to be surprised. I liked this one very much and I will watch it over and over.

To tell you the truth, after watching this movie, I'm still not sure how I felt about it. Granted, Joshua Jackson is fabulous. I love him in just about everything he does. The story has got a good premise, something that could resound with anyone. (It's the what-if situation where something unexpected happens and turns your life upside down. Which is then followed by the inevitable journey of self discovery and what's the meaning of life.) It wasn't a horrible movie, just different. The narrator's voice is a bit jarring at times compared to the slow, gradual pace of the movie. I know it was shot in Canada, but you don't have to be a Canadian to appreciate the landscape and scenery. If you're looking to watch it, I would try and rent it first if you can. See how you feel about it yourself. Personally, I'm glad I own it, but only cause it was on sale. Check it out for yourself.

Okay. I'm not a movie critic nor one who finds the mainstream movies as enjoyable as others, so take this with a grain of salt. My wife and I are rather "contra" movie people. If it gets 5 stars and is a box office smash, we usually hate it.

When we selected this movie to watch, we had no idea what to expect. As it turns out, this movie was about a normal guy living a normal life and draws the short straw. It showed his struggles, his mistakes, interactions with strangers and people he loved, and the ultimate power of family. It was all done in a nice, wholesome fashion.

If you reject the pop culture trash that passes for entertainment today, then this is a movie you will likely enjoy. If you love the "thug life" movies, keep moving. Nothing to see here.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Starkes Indie-Roadmovie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A master piece!

I don't write reviews so I can honestly say this film was special. Perhaps it is my love of motorcycles and the freedom they bring or the the fact I am in a similar position to him. The things he goes through and the thoughts he has are spot on.

The story is essentially about a young man on hearing he has a terminal case of cancer decides to have an adventure riding East to West across Canada. He comes to realise he is in a rut living a very secure, over insured life. What he decides is to live in the present. To say more is to spoil this movie, it is about the journey both on the road and his mind. The characters are portrayed as real fully rounded people all with their faults and heaps of humanity.

For me this little known film is a masterpiece but that might just be about where I am right now, that said if you can visit that place and learn from it without a terminal illness that has got to be good! It may change your life! Go have that adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Canadian Film!

Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) is a teacher, in Toronto, not satisfied with how his life is going. He does have a loving family, and a lady who he is engaged to marry. He finds out he has terminal cancer and has a few months to live. He tells his family and girlfriend, he sees a vintage motorcycle for sale and rolls down the rim on coffee that tells him to go west. He decides to take the motorcycle and heads westward. He loves the large displays such as the hockey stick and takes pictures. On the way he has an accident and slips his motorcycle on a dead skunk, he is rescued by a lady who moans the fact that her dog spends more time in the bed next to her than 2 previous husbands. The scenic views are excellent as he travels in the prairie provinces. His girlfriend meets him and finds out that he has had an affair with a lady who rescued him in the forest. He knows that the chemo treatments will be very exhausting. Tragically hip star sits beside him in a motel and offers him a joint, telling him that medical marijuana will help. Joshua Jackson is excellent as is the soundtrack moody music. Fiona Reed later in Greek Wedding is his mother and Chuck Shamata is his father. Some extras in the film. Jackson now plays a medical worker on a cruise boat with American stars. Highly recommended and a keeper in movie catalog.
