Plot summary
David Gordon writes science fiction. His wife died two years ago, while the two of them were trying to adopt, and he is matched with Dennis, a six-year-old in foster care who says he has come from Mars. The boy avoids direct sunlight, keeps weights on his body to offset the planet's weak gravitational pull, will eat only one kind of cereal, and hangs upside down to help his circulation. David spends time drawing him out of the big cardboard box he hides in and is cleared to take him home to meet his dog. His friend Harlee and his sister Liz help him, and his agent Jeff presses him to finish a contracted sequel.

- David Gerrold has said the producers forced the protagonist of Martian Child to be changed from a gay man to a straight widower, though he felt it was a worthwhile trade-off to get a story about a child in a group home needing a parent published.
- Martian Child is based on David Gerrold's 1994 Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novella, not his 2002 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, a mix-up that confused fans, especially in segments of the gay community.
