Duke Rightious was born in Berkeley, California on August 17, 1961, the second child to Gaylan Chepourkoff (son of noted artist and sculptor Michael Chepourkoff) and Diane Minto, and spent his early childhood in the Bay area. He started writing music at the age of seven, after spending his younger years listening to everything from classical to African tribal music on a daily basis. In third grade, Duke's father, who was afraid of earthquakes and wanted to move from the Bay area, found work on the other end of the state and moved the family to Upland, CA. Within months of their first move, however, they started a "cross country sojourn", beginning with Lubbock, Texas. Within a year of moving to Lubbock, his father then moved the family to Alexandria, Louisiana, where Duke learned to love the bayou and all things Southern and was "discovered" as a singer by the pastor's wife at the church they attended.
