Jeff was born and raised in Canton, Ohio. For high school, he attended the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy on a full scholarship, and later received another scholarship to attend Yale University, where he majored in East Asian Studies/Chinese. While at Yale, he spent his junior year studying in Beijing and Taipei, which led him to several more years living in Taiwan after college. Upon moving to Taiwan, he quickly established himself as an actor and TV/radio host, mainly in Mandarin. Over the course of his successful career in Asia, he appeared in numerous dramas and comedies and hosted several programs (including the Chinese version of Fear Factor) which have been broadcast in Chinese communities around the world.
