Joel grew up in rural North Western Australia, with a dream to become a rock star and tour the world forever, playing for the masses. Having supported Birds of Tokyo, Ian Moss, The Beautiful Girls, Diesel, Regurgitator, Daryl Braithwaite and more all before turning 17, things were going to plan. Joel was tireless, his original music played on ABC National Radio, represented WA in Soccer and was also in training for the Western Australian Football League. But, Joel surprised himself and moved to Brazil where he lived for a year as a Rotary International Exchange Student, touring with local bands, learning Portuguese and exploring culture.
