John Reid Edwards was born in Seneca, South Carolina on June 10th, 1953. John was born to a middle class family. His father worked at a textile mill for years. John attended public schools in Robbins, North Carolina while he was growing up and worked at his father's textile mill himself when he was old enough to do so. He graduated with a B.A. from North Carolina State University in 1974, and graduated with a J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. He owned his own law firm in Raleigh, North Carolina called Edwards & Kirby along with his best friend from college and business partner.
