Scott, a native of Minnesota, began his professional career on the stage at the world renowned Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. His credits at the Guthrie include A Christmas Carol and Peer Gynt. He received training at both Oral Roberts University and the University of Minnesota while studying for his B.S. in business administration. Among the shows performed in at this time were: Hamlet, The Sound Of Music, Carnival, The Fantastiks and Oklahoma! In 1986, Scott flew to Los Angeles to compete on Star Search, in the acting category. After winning 13 consecutive weeks during the regular season, he went on to win the final show and took home the $100,000 first prize.
